The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode and his wife Bolanle, have sent a call for global action to fast-track the process of achieving gender parity across the world.
They made the call at the Police College Grounds, Ikeja, during the celebration of the 2016 International Women’s Day, organized by the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Governor Ambode who was represented by the Deputy Govornor, Dr. (Mrs) Idiat Adebule, showered praises on women in the state’s public service, for their enormous contributions, promising that his administration would continue to pursue gender balance in all administrative activities.
In her own address, Mrs Ambode, said the day was not just for celebrating women who made heroic contributions in the past, it was also a day of deep reflection on the condition of women, adding that vital questions needed to be asked and answered to point the way forward for women.
According to her, ‘To be able to honestly assess ourselves and determine the way forward, we must ask some vital questions around the theme of this year’s celebration which is ’pledge to parity’.
‘Some of the questions include – where do we find ourselves today? What are the main factors that hinder gender parity? How can we make rapid progress towards achieving parity?’

She appealed that existing legislations must properly tackle poor economic empowerment, wicked cultural stereotypes, violence against women and children, discriminatory boy, girl education ratio and other obstacles slowing down the process of parity.

Also speaking, the commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon Lola Akande, traced the origin of the celebration, listed the actions of the state government towards gender equality and requested everyone to sincerely work towards the total emancipation of women.
