Goodwill Message Delivered By His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, Governor of Lagos State at the Christmas Eve Dance of Yoruba Tennis Club, Held at Onikan, Lagos on Thursday, 24th December, 2015

Greetings!!!

Christmas Day is just a few hours away and I am happy to join fellow brothers at this annual Christmas Eve dance to kick-start the season’s festivities.

I am happy this annual dance, hosted by our great Club, has grown in scope and relevance such that it is no longer just a social night for merriment in the calendar of our club but also a platform for social interaction and exchange of constructive conversations.

I congratulate the Chairman – Brother Dele Martins, the management and all brothers for deepening the vision of the founding fathers of this great Club, the foremost indigenous social club in Nigeria.

Our Club will continue to be the flagship in our nation if all of us continue to demonstrate strong commitment to the vision for which the club was established and adapt it to modern realities.  We must be willing to embrace change and reforms as the early signs show that the coming year is one that will task our creativity.

Distinguished Guests, Members and Leaders here present, the outgoing year has been mixed fortunes for many people. It has been successful for some and challenging for others. For me, I was not the Governor of Lagos State, a year ago. I remember being here with my predecessor and now the Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola and the warmth you received us with.

However 2015 has been, we have a new opportunity in 2016. The Federal Revenue projections do not appear encouraging but we must be prepared. I recently presented the 2016 Budget to the State House of Assembly. We have positioned to take advantage of the opportunities and maximise the application of resources to stimulate the economy and create wealth in Lagos State. Year 2016 is a defining moment for us as a State as we face the task of making Lagos self-reliant and more prosperous.

I want to use this opportunity to seek for your support of the programmes and policies of this administration. Government alone cannot ensure full implementation of the budget; the people also have to keep their own side of the bargain by diligently performing their civic obligations to the Government through prompt and regular payment of taxes.

The success of the year 2016 budget is anchored on our Internally Generated Revenue. We would pay greater attention to E-Governance to help boost service delivery to our people. The revenue derived from the Federal Allocation has been on the decline and is expected to decline further.

All of us therefore have our jobs cut out for us in the New Year.  Lagos State must be clean, safe and prosperous. That is our promise to the people and it is a promise I intend to keep.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Prosperous Year 2016 in advance.

Thank you.

Itesiwaju ilu Eko, lo je wa L’Ogun!!!

Goodwill Message Delivered By His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, Governor of Lagos State at the Christmas Eve Dance of Island  Club, Held At 3, Island Club Road, Onikan, Lagos  On  Thursday, 24th   December, 2015

I am happy to be here today, exchanging season’s greetings with distinguished Lagosians and members of the prestigious Island Club. My presence here tonight, the first since my assumption of office as Governor, is an opportunity for me to share with you the progress we have made and our projections for the New Year.

I sincerely thank the Chairman, Chief Oladipupo Okpeseyi, Patrons, Trustees and members for receiving me last year in the company of my predecessor and now the Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola and now welcoming me as the Patron.

Our focus in the last seven months has been to lay a strong foundation for the sustainable development of the State through prudent management of resources, public sector reforms and realignments thereby reducing the cost of governance, concentration on infrastructural development, security, health and transportation. More significant progress will be witnessed in the coming year with the implementation of the “Peoples Budget” that I presented recently to the State House of Assembly.

The indicators for 2016 are not encouraging but we are very confident that our State will record significant progress. We will introduce measures to increase our revenues and allocate resources to the areas of greater good. We have had several good meetings with investors who are keen to come and do business in Lagos State.

So while, the indicators say that there will be less revenue, inflation and job cuts, we are quietly confident about 2016. We are inspired to face the challenges and prepared to maximise the opportunities that will unfold.

I thank distinguished members for holding aloft the ideals of this prestigious Club as envisioned by the founding fathers, the most important of which is spreading opportunities and making Lagos State a home for all. This is in line with my administration’s focus of making Lagos “Work for All”. A Lagos that is home for all and works for all will be a prosperous Lagos, even in the face of national and global economic crisis.

My most important assignment here this evening however, is to appeal for your continued support, cooperation and understanding so that together we can achieve unprecedented success in actualising our plans in the coming year.

As we look forward to the challenges of 2016, I can confidently say that many of the people who will shape the year are seated here.

As a well-respected body comprising eminent and distinguished Lagosians, I am aware that the prosperity and progress of Lagos State is your concern.  It is also my concern and priority because that is the assignment I have been given by the good people of this State. Together, we will make this happen.

I thank you for your attention and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2016.

Itesiwaju ilu Eko, lo je wa L’Ogun!!!

Eid-El-Maulud: Pray for Peace, Progress of Nigeria, Ambode Charges Muslims

Eid-El-Maulud: Pray for Peace, Progress of Nigeria, Ambode Charges Muslims

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday called on Muslims in the nation to offer special prayers for greater peace, unity and continuous progress of Nigeria, as they join their counterparts across the world to celebrate Eid El Maulud, which is the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The Governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, enjoined Muslims to follow the exemplary leadership of the Holy Prophet by promoting peaceful co-existence among the various segments of the society.

While imploring Nigerians to shun ethnic, political and religious differences and work towards building a safer and better Nigeria, Governor Ambode said the celebration of the birth of the Prophet should renew the faith and bond of unity among Nigerians as one people and one nation irrespective of diversity.

“On the occasion of the commemoration of the birth of the holy Prophet, it is imperative to reflect on his teachings and uphold his legacies of unity, integrity, peaceful coexistence and love for one’s neighbour, which are indispensable in our quest for meaningful development and the profitable management of our diversity,” he said.

Governor Ambode also urged Muslim to internalize the virtues of honesty, selflessness, charity, tolerance, good neighbourliness, justice, equity and fairness which the Mohammad preached, saying such will go a long way to engender national development.

“I want to seize this occasion to urge all Nigerians to commit and rededicate themselves to making greater effort to imbibe these qualities and values as they celebrate the Prophet’s birth”.

“I therefore wish all our Muslim brothers and sisters in Nigeria and Lagos in particular a happy Eid-el-Maulud”, he said.
