Lagos Scholarship Board to Hold Bursary Interview for Students

As part of efforts to reduce parent’s financial burden, the Lagos State Government through the State’s Scholarship Board has concluded plans to organize the 2015/2016 session bursary interviews for students of Lagos State indigene in tertiary institutions across the country who have obtained the application forms.

A statement signed by the Director, Lagos State Scholarship Board, Mrs Omauton Yetunde Jegede, said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode approved that the Bursary interviews hold in specific zones across the country and also at the five Divisions of the State.

In Kaduna State, the interview is expected to hold on October 5th and 6th 2015 at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

In Rivers State; the interview will hold on October 6th and 7th 2015 at University of Port-Harcourt, Choba, Rivers State.

The interview will also hold in Kwara State at the University of Ilorin from October 12th to 13th. Similarly, the interview will hold in Abuja from 17th to 18th of November at Nigerian Law School, Abuja as well as in Akure, Ondo State at the Federal University of Technology, Akure on 1st and 2nd of December.

For the Lagos Zone, Mrs Jegede said that the interviews will hold at St. Georges’ Primary School, Falomo, Lagos Island (for Lagos Division) and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Noforija, Epe (for Epe Division) on 14th and 15th October, 2015.

The interview for Badagry Division will hold on 20th and 21st October at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Ijanikin, while that of Ikeja and Ikorodu divisions will hold on 26th and 27th October, 2015 at Government College, Agege beside NYSC Orientation Camp, Agege (for Ikeja Division) and Oriwu College, Ikorodu (for Ikorodu Division).

Mrs. Jegede further enjoined all applicants to attend the interview in zones closer to them adding that any applicant who wishes to attend the interview in Lagos Zone should go to their respective divisions for the exercise. The Lagos State Government annually conducts the bursary interviews to determine the indigeneship claim of applicants who must be full time students in various tertiary institutions before awards are given.

The bursary award ranges between N20, 000, N30, 000 and N50, 000 depending on the course of study.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday constituted the Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board with a charge on them to discharge their duties without fear or favour.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, the six-man membership Board is expected to coordinate intending pilgrims from Lagos to this year’s pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

The Board has Bishop Sola Ore as its chairman with Ms. Jibike Babatunde, Mrs Arin Ajose and Pastor Laja Diele as members.

Other members of the Board include Mr. Tunde Temionu and Mr. Thomas Adefolusho Adekoya.

Governor Ambode in the statement also urged the Board to ensure a hitch free exercise and adequate welfare for the state pilgrims in the Holy Land.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday congratulated Nigerians as the nation marks its 55th Independence Anniversary as a sovereign state, saying patriotism and selfless service are two aspects that can truly reflect the essence of the country’s Independence.

The Governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, said the period of Independence must not be lost on anyone, urging Nigerians to rededicate themselves to the pride and service of the nation as exemplified by her founding fathers.
The Governor said there was need to rekindle the flame that ignited the determination of the founding fathers to fight for and obtain independence and the pride they had in serving the country adding that there was no better time than now to reawaken the waning glory of the nation.

“You would recall that Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, had on that memorable day, 55 years ago, in his Independence Anniversary speech, admonished everyone to dedicate their life and service to our country. This, for me is the springboard that can take help us return to our glorious past that the likes of Pa Anthony Enahoro, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Herbert Macaulay and a host of others helped to build in their time”, he said.

He said the 2015 elections was a period that handed the nation a lifeline to put her back on track and reclaim its waning glory as the giant of Africa, urging all Nigerians irrespective of party affiliation, religious belief or ethnic leaning to join hands with the government of the day to salvage the nation.

He also called on Nigerians to support the ongoing efforts by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to rebuild the nation’s foundation, saying such efforts could not be left to the government alone.
He expressed optimism that the Buhari administration will succeed in its quest to reduce the rate of poverty, fight corruption, change the economic fortunes and stem the tide of insecurity in the country especially in North East Nigeria, saying it would however require all hands to be on deck.

Investors confident of Governor Ambode’s Investment Drive -Unilever Boss

Managing Director of Unilever Group, Mr. Yaw Nsarkoh on Wednesday expressed confidence in Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s investment drive, just as he said that investors are optimistic of his administration’s quest to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

Nsarkoh spoke when he led top management of the company on a courtesy visit to Governor Ambode at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
He said the Governor since assumption of office has shown his desire to attract new investments in the state by showcasing long term investors who have been in Lagos and who have been able to succeed in their business as shining examples to attract new investment into the state.

“Though the Governor has only just assumed office, I can say that he is committed to creating an enabling environment for business going by the conversation he’s been having with people and investors like myself because I am not just the only leader of private sector business that he speaks to. He has shown that commitment and it’s up to all of us to now work in collaborative ways and partnership so that we can achieve the governor’s vision”, Nsarkoh said.

Briefing newsmen on the import of the visit, Mr. Nsarkoh who was accompanied by top management team of Unilever, said it was a follow-up to an earlier discussion with the Governor on how to collaborate and “champion the cause of what we call partner to win and improve the industrial base of Lagos state by bringing in suppliers for a supply base that may not hitherto exist in Lagos”.

The Managing Director who also handed a memento to the Governor which he described as “signifying our joint commitment to sustainable development goals-a sustainable living plan which articulates the fact that business can do well by doing good things to the society”.
“So if you look at the way we develop our brands, we always try to see how we can increase the social impact, for example we have fortified Knorr bullion cube with iron therefore contributing to the elimination of the problem of anemia in the state”, he said.

He further described the impact of a project he called gbemiga which the company intends to pilot in Lagos and some other parts of the of the country in which idle youths will be recruited from local communities to help in the distribution chain as a program that will contribute to overall well being of the state.

“This programme enables people who are not working before, who are part of the informal economy who we bring into the formal distributive process, empower them therefore financially and they also help to improve the distribution process”, he said.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode mourns passage of Gamaliel Onosode

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday expressed sadness over the death of foremost technocrat and industrialist, Gamaliel Onosode.

Onosode, a former Presidential Adviser to President Shehu Shagari died on Tuesday at the age of 82.

“Mr. Onosode was one of the few Nigerians who ruled the boardroom. A quintessential businessman, he was also a master in his field and deeply religious. It was not therefore surprising that he rose to become a leading boardroom player in Nigeria’s corporate environment”.

“He will be remembered for the dexterity he brought to bear when he served as chairman and board member of several multinational companies”.

“I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the Onosode family on behalf of the good people of Lagos state. This is indeed a sad loss”, Governor Ambode said.

He also prayed that Almighty God grant the soul of the departed peaceful repose and for the family, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
